January 19 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria, Greece and Romania on Friday signed a declaration of intent to collaborate on joint cross-border projects in offshore wind energy, renewable hydrogen and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the energy ministry in Sofia said.
The declaration involves the creation of a regional hydrogen cluster, bringing together governments, transmission system operators and businesses, the ministry said in a press release. It will spearhead cross-border projects that promote renewable energy and integrate it into a low-emission, renewable hydrogen production system for the energy, industrial and transport sectors, as well as develop dedicated hydrogen infrastructure.
The agreement also focuses on exploring and developing the sustainable use of offshore wind potential in the Black and Aegean seas, with the three Southeast European countries jointly applying for cross-border renewable energy status in the current Connecting Europe Facility call.
Bulgaria has been working alongside Romania on initial studies for offshore energy zones in the Black Sea, while the addition of Greece extends the initiative to the Aegean Sea, which will create a comprehensive overview of offshore wind potential in Southeast Europe and lay the foundation for a unified regulatory framework, the ministry said.
These projects aim to achieve a transition to a decarbonised and climate-neutral economy, with the final aspect of the collaboration being the development of cross-border infrastructure for electric vehicle charging.
On December 18, Bulgaria and Greece signed a memorandum of understanding to increase the transmission capacity of their electricity and gas networks, build hydrogen transmission networks and tap the potential of renewable energy sources.
